SUMMER 2007 NEWSLETTER
URBAN COLLAGE, INC. – ATLANTA – LEXINGTON

Dear #mem.FirstName#,

After a busy Spring that included our 10-year anniversary and the opening of our new office in Lexington, this issue highlights projects completed over the last several months.  They include progressive and innovative plans for the continued growth and vitality of major areas of Atlanta and Charlotte as well as unique public/private partnerships that are making things happen.

Lakewood Fairgrounds Redevelopment
Retained by the Atlanta Development Authority, Urban Collage was part of a team charged with examining the feasibility of redevelopment for the historic Lakewood Fairgrounds property owned by the City of Atlanta.  Set on over 100 acres directly south of Downtown, the site has several historic buildings on it, as well as a central lake and an operating amphitheatre.  As part of the study, Urban Collage conducted public outreach, assisted in examining potential redevelopment issues and helped craft an RFP for new development and reuse of the site.  The RFP was issued in July 2007 and has already grabbed the interest of dozens of potential developers.

Peachtree Partnership
Mayor Shirley Franklin recently announced the creation of the Peachtree Partnership.  The organization, chaired by Raymond Christman, is a collaboration between the Atlanta Development Authority, the Atlanta Committee for Progress and the three community improvement districts operating along the corridor.  This milestone follows an intensive study that Urban Collage performed earlier this year under the leadership of Tom Bell and Egbert Perry that looked at development opportunities along the 15-mile-long corridor linked by a potential streetcar system.  Urban Collage continues to provide planning, economic development and community outreach support to the partnership.

Northlake Small Area Plan

Earlier this year, Urban Collage helped the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission develop policies and guidelines for a pilot pedestrian-oriented plan around the Northlake Mall area.  The plan is part of a larger effort to update the area's comprehensive growth plan in response to explosive growth and the possible construction of rapid transit.  The work follows Charlotte's progressive strategy of "Corridors, Centers and Wedges."

New Hires!

Urban Collage welcomes two new planners to the staff:

Blue Marshall graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology this past Spring with a Bachelors of Science degree in Architecture.  Drawing from her background in architecture, Blue provides graphic and production support to various projects including site planning, corridor studies and various urban redevelopment sites.

Niti Gajjar has recently graduated with a Masters degree in Community Planning from the University of Cincinnati.  Aside from her academic background in architecture and urban planning, she has worked on a multitude of projects in India, including various master plans for cities, towns, industrial areas and burgeoning rural areas.  Niti will lend her talents to various land use and transportation corridor planning projects.

Senior Associate Nominated as GPA Treasurer

The BeltLine continues to move forward...

The momentum for the Atlanta BeltLine continues to grow.  Following up on recently announced purchases of new parks and open space, detailed Subarea Master Planning is now underway within five strategic areas.  A partnership for controlling a critical 5-mile section in northeast Atlanta is also being pursued.  Urban Collage is fortunate to continue our role in this transformative project by augmenting the newly created Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. staff.

Covington Zoning

Earlier this year, Urban Collage worked with zoning and legal specialists to prepare graphic standards and form-based code for the corridor, which runs through Covington, GA - about 35 miles southeast of Atlanta.  This progressive document was adopted in early 2007 and efforts are presently underway to revise the city's zoning ordinance.

Downtown's "East-West Corridor" gains momentum
This past Spring, Urban Collage helped Central Atlanta Progress organize and facilitate a forum for the Corridor (which stretches from the State Capitol to the Georgia Dome) that included both private and public stakeholders.  Since then, several feasibility studies have been announced to provide more detail on development opportunities around the the "gulch" in Downtown Atlanta.  Some preliminary ideas for the "gulch" site to date have included a potential Intermodal Transportation Terminal, a Casino and/or a large mixed-use center.
